As the members of the Shasta Fair Housing Alliance
(SFHA) made plans to make Fair Housing a high
priority here in Redding and Shasta County, we
decided to focus first on community education. We
knew from shared anecdotal evidence that the tenants,
housing providers and advocates in the area needed
more information and resources about fair housing
issues. Therefore, SFHA provides this user-friendly
web site as a fair housing tool for the people of
Redding and Shasta County.
The website are produced
with the generous support of the City of Redding and
the County of Shastas housing programs. They
are modeled on "A Handbook on the Rights and
Responsibilities of Tenants with Disabilities,"
produced by the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency
with a Fair Housing Initiatives Program Grant in
1997. Gary Rhoades, Managing Attorney of Legal
Services of Northern California (LSNC), is the
primary editor while LSNC law clerks Ron Copeland,
Michael Khoronov, and Kyra Smith are the primary
authors. However, others reviewed sections and
provided invaluable editing, including Adam Culbreath
from the National Center for Youth Law and Stephen
Dean from the Law Office of Stephen Dean.
We would also like to recognize the contributions
of the SFHA organizers and their representatives
including Northern Valley Catholic Social Service
(Martha McCoy, Bob Castnor), Shasta Citizens Against
Racism (Issac Lowe), the City of Redding Housing
Authority (Meridith Chase, Reed Flory, Don Meeks and
Lainie Barrows), Shasta County Housing and Community
Action Agency (Jerry Brown), Shasta County Mental
Health (Mey Chao-Lee), Shasta County Public Health
(Wern Jiem Pien), the Independent Living Services
Center (Jerry Towne, Sally McWilliams) the Landlord
Management Network (Rita Post), and Board of Realtors
(Fred Quigley).
The sterling production team of Cathy Ferrell,
Marquetta Merical, and Kathie King of LSNC was
absolutely essential. Finally, this web site, www.shastafairhousing.org,
was developed by Gary and Alex Rhoades along with
Cathy Ferrell and will be maintained by LSNC.
